What size chandelier do I need?

How we worked that out

Add the room's length and width in metres, then multiply by 8.3 to get the width in centimetres. A 4 m × 5 m room gives 9 × 8.3 ≈ 75 cm across.
Over a dining table, aim for half to two-thirds of the table's width — and never wider than the table minus 30 cm, so nobody knocks their head standing up.
Over a table, the bottom of the fixture sits 76–91 cm above the tabletop. Anywhere people walk underneath, keep the bottom at least 210 cm off the floor.
For every 30 cm of ceiling above 2.4 m, add roughly 7 cm of drop so the piece stays in proportion.

Wrong size is the number one reason a light gets sent back. It is also the easiest thing in this whole category to get right, because it is arithmetic — three measurements and two formulas.

Take these three numbers before you do anything else:

Room length and width, in metres.
Floor to ceiling, in metres. Measure it. Most Egyptian flats are 2.6–2.8 m, but "most" is not "yours".
If it's going over a table: the table's length and width.

Chandeliers and ceiling fixtures

Width

Add the room's length and width in metres, multiply by 8. That's your diameter in centimetres.

Anything within about 10 cm of the target reads as correct. Above roughly 100 cm, two evenly spaced fixtures almost always look better than one very large one.

Height of the fixture itself

Allow 20–25 cm of fixture height per metre of ceiling.

Clearance from the floor

Anywhere people walk: at least 2.1 m from floor to the lowest point of the fixture. This is the rule that rules out most tall chandeliers in a normal bedroom, and it is worth checking before you fall for one.

Over a dining table

Size to the table, not the room.

Height: 75–90 cm from the tabletop to the lowest point.
Width: half to two-thirds of the table's width — and never wider than the table.
Shape: round fixture over a round table; linear pendant over a rectangular one.

Pendants over a counter or island

Height: 75–90 cm above the worktop, same as a dining table.
Spacing in a row: 60–75 cm between centres.
How many: odd numbers look intentional. Three over a 2 m island; two only if the island is short.
End clearance: keep at least 15 cm between the outer pendant and the end of the counter.

Wall sconces

Along a corridor, space sconces 2–2.5 m apart. Closer looks crowded; further apart leaves dark gaps between pools of light.

Table lamps

One rule covers almost every case: the bottom of the shade should sit at roughly eye level when you're seated — about shoulder height sitting up in bed, or level with your eyes in an armchair. Higher and the bulb glares; lower and you can't read.

In practice that means 55–70 cm total lamp height on a standard 60 cm nightstand, and 60–80 cm on a lower side table.

Floor lamps

150–180 cm total height. Below about 145 cm the bulb sits at seated eye level and glares; above about 180 cm it lights the ceiling instead of you. A reading lamp should have its shade or head roughly level with your shoulder when seated, and ideally reach 30–60 cm out over the chair or sofa.
