How to Size a Chandelier for Your Room (2026 Guide)

Most chandeliers that look wrong in a room are not ugly. They are the wrong size, hung at the wrong height — and both of those are arithmetic, not taste.

Two numbers do almost all the work. Get them right and a EGP 3,090 fixture looks deliberate. Get them wrong and a EGP 15,000 one looks like a mistake someone is too embarrassed to mention.

1. The width

Take your room's length and width in metres, add them together, and multiply by 8. That gives you a sensible chandelier diameter in centimetres.

Room 4 m × 5 m → 4 + 5 = 9 → 9 × 8 = about 72 cm.

That is the metric version of the rule interior designers have used for decades (in feet, length plus width in feet equals diameter in inches — which works out to ×8.33 in metric). Round to whatever the fixture you like actually measures; anything within about 10 cm of the target will read as correct.

A few honest adjustments:

  • Two smaller pieces beat one undersized one. In a long reception, two 50 cm chandeliers spaced evenly look considered. One 50 cm chandelier stranded in the middle of a 6 m room looks lost.
  • Busy room, simpler shape. If the furniture is heavily patterned, stay at the lower end of the range and pick a plainer form.
  • Ignore the rule over a dining table — that has its own calculation, below.

2. The height — and this is where Egyptian rooms differ

Almost every chandelier guide online is written for 3 m or higher ceilings. Most Egyptian apartments run 2.6–2.8 m. That single fact invalidates a lot of standard advice, and it is why so many chandeliers bought here end up feeling like they are in the way.

The fixture's own height

Allow roughly 20–25 cm of chandelier height for every metre of ceiling height.

This is why a 120 cm chandelier — beautiful in a stairwell or a double-height entrance — is the wrong purchase for a normal bedroom, no matter how much you like it.

Clearance from the floor

Anywhere people walk, keep at least 2.1 m from the floor to the lowest point of the fixture. In a 2.6 m room that leaves you 50 cm of chandelier. Measure before you fall in love.

3. Over a dining table, forget the room

A dining chandelier is sized to the table, not to the room. Two rules:

  • Height: 75–90 cm from the tabletop to the lowest point of the fixture. Higher and it stops lighting the food. Lower and people stop being able to see each other across the table.
  • Width: half to two-thirds of the table's width, and never wider than the table. A fixture wider than the table is the most common mistake in Egyptian dining rooms, and it is the one everybody notices from their chair.

Shape matters too, and it is simple: a round fixture over a round table, a linear one over a rectangular table. A circle over a long table always leaves both ends in shadow — which is why linear pendants exist.

4. A worked example

A typical new-build reception in Sheikh Zayed: 4.5 m × 6 m, ceiling 2.8 m, with a rectangular dining table 90 cm × 180 cm at one end.

  • Main chandelier width: 4.5 + 6 = 10.5 → 10.5 × 8 ≈ 84 cm. An 80 × 80 cm eight-light piece is right.
  • Main chandelier height: 2.8 m ceiling → keep it under 70 cm tall.
  • Over the dining table: width between 45 and 60 cm, hung 75–90 cm above the tabletop. A linear pendant around 80 cm long also works here and lights the table more evenly.

Total: two fixtures, not one, because 27 m² is too much room for a single light to carry.

5. Before you order — measure these three things

  1. Room length and width, in metres.
  2. Floor to ceiling, in metres — measure it, don't assume 2.8.
  3. For a dining fixture: the table's width and length.
